The death toll has now risen to four, with the fourth victim, an unidentified male, pulled from the rubble by rescue teams. And this is the part most people miss: local farmer Kishore Haribhajan from Brindhaven was also among those who perished in the disaster. Prem Balram of Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) confirmed the grim discovery, adding that the search for additional victims continues, as there’s still a chance more people could be trapped beneath the debris.
According to eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana, three bodies were initially recovered from the site, confirming the worst fears of the community. “Search and rescue teams are working tirelessly alongside emergency services and multi-disciplinary teams to intensify operations,” Sisilana explained. “We’re doing everything possible to locate any further entrapments.”
But here’s where it gets controversial: troubling details have emerged about the legality of the structure. Sisilana revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the building had no approved plans, making it illegal. eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba visited the site on Thursday night to offer condolences to the grieving families, a gesture that, while appreciated, does little to ease the pain of those affected. Meanwhile, the municipality insists it’s ramping up efforts on the ground, mobilizing additional resources to aid in rescue operations and provide medical support to survivors.
