A Tragic Accident: U.S. National's Life Lost in Train-Vehicle Collision on Jinja Road
In a devastating incident on Friday, December 19, 2025, at approximately 5:25 p.m., a passenger train en route from Kampala to Mukono collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero, resulting in the tragic loss of life. The crash occurred at Wankoko Railway Crossing along Spring Road, within the jurisdiction of the Jinja Road Police Division.
According to police statements, the train, carrying passengers, collided with the vehicle, which was being driven towards Kampala from the Luzira side. The impact was so severe that the train pushed the vehicle approximately 200 meters off the road. The vehicle, occupied by four U.S. nationals, including Gardener Mathew, Savana Gardener, and two children, was working with the NGO Baptism Mission in Uganda.
The aftermath of the collision was grim. Savana Gardener, who was in the co-driver's seat, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Rubis Hospital along Lugogo Bypass. The other occupants were rushed to the hospital for medical attention, but their conditions are not disclosed.
Initial police findings suggest that the crash may have been caused by careless driving and the driver's failure to heed the hand signals issued by a Railway Police officer present at the crossing. These findings are preliminary and subject to change as the investigation progresses.
Railway Police officers have visited the scene, and witness statements are being recorded. The Uganda Police Force has expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to the injured.
