Melbourne's Metro Trains and Premier Jacinta Allan have issued a joint apology to passengers after a series of unfortunate events left thousands of commuters stuck in sweltering carriages for up to two hours. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, was a result of an overhead power fault at Armadale, causing a halt in services through the newly opened Metro Tunnel. This disruption affected the Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Sunbury lines, which were only recently re-routed as part of the Metro Tunnel project.
The fault caused two trains without air-conditioning to become stranded in 30-degree Celsius heat, with approximately 600 passengers on board. The Metro Trains CEO, Raymond O'Flaherty, acknowledged the frustration caused, stating, 'I know it was incredibly frustrating and took a lot of extra time for them to make their journeys.' He assured that the issue was due to an entangled overhead wire and pantograph, a complex situation that required careful de-train procedures to ensure passenger safety.
Despite the inconvenience, O'Flaherty defended the time taken to evacuate the passengers, citing the need for thorough safety checks. He explained, 'Because we were very nervous making sure that everybody would be safe, that no-one would be electrocuted, that's why it took us that 90 minutes to two hours before we could get people off the trains.'
The Premier, Jacinta Allan, also apologized, emphasizing the importance of passenger comfort and safety. She assured that investigations into the fault and the performance of passenger information screens were underway. The state opposition, however, has accused the government of inadequate preparation for the high-capacity metro trains, comparing it to an 'Apple iPhone with a battery built for Nokia phones.'
