A shocking incident has sent ripples through German politics: A member of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party has been formally charged with performing a Nazi salute inside the Reichstag, Germany's parliament. Berlin prosecutors have brought charges against the individual, alleging that they performed the illegal salute. The incident reportedly occurred in June 2023, where the accused allegedly greeted a fellow party member with a heel click and the infamous 'Hitler salute' at the Reichstag's east entrance.
But here's where it gets controversial... Making this gesture is a serious offense in Germany, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to three years. The individual in question has been identified by the newspaper Bild as Matthias Moosdorf, a 60-year-old parliamentarian representing Zwickau in the former East German state of Saxony.
Prosecutors stated that Moosdorf was aware that his actions were visible to others in the entrance area. In response to the allegations, Moosdorf was stripped of his parliamentary immunity in October. However, he has since denied the gesture on X (formerly Twitter).
Moosdorf's background adds another layer to this already complex situation. He has been a member of the AfD since 2016 and, until recently, served as a foreign policy spokesperson for the party. He was relieved of this duty in May due to his perceived friendliness towards Russia, which caused internal friction. And this is the part most people miss... Further complicating matters, it was revealed in October 2024 that Moosdorf, a trained cellist, holds an honorary professorship at a Moscow music academy.
